Dogs

The art of doing nothing together.

An open book, a dog on the couch, and an afternoon with nowhere to be. There's room to stay put for a while.

Some afternoons, the book stays open at the same page for quite a while. Your dog has found a comfortable stretch of couch. You've settled at the other end, close enough that getting up might require a little rearranging.

An hour without plans can leave you wondering what you ought to do with it. There are probably a few things you could finish. For now, the book is within reach and your feet are up.

The dog lets out a long sigh and shifts closer, putting a paw against your leg. You adjust the book so you can keep reading without moving very much. A few minutes later, you need to turn the page again.

Eventually you'll get up. For the moment, there's nowhere you need to be, and the dog has stretched into the space between you and the edge of the couch. You settle back and read another page.
